During my masters, I investigated the hypoxia of Long Island Sound, sources of nitrogen runoff, and the remediation efforts from the states of New York and Connecticut. Here you will find the major findings and products from this project.
I hypothesized that the major sources of nitrogen to LIS were major cities, which after using the InVEST modeling tool from the Natural Capital Project, we found to be true. The city of Meriden was identified as the location with highest concentration of nitrogen runoff to LIS.
Looking at concentrations of nitrogen and dissolved oxygen in the water collected at CT DEEP stations, we found a decreasing trend in total nitrogen concentration - with the remaining higher levels being closer to New York State. However, contrary to what is advertised, the levels of DO also showed a decreasing trend.
